  • In 1700, a triple alliance of Denmark-Norway, Saxony-Poland-Lithuania and Russia launched a threefold attack upon Swedish lands.

Standing against them was the young king, Charles XII, who had been on the throne for three years and was a mere eighteen years old.

Yet in spite of the overwhelming odds stacked against his kingdom, Charles XII, fought back against the triple alliance and won a decisive victory at Narva, forcing Peter the Great of Russia to sue for peace.

But rather than accepting peace Charles pushed onwards and six years later had forced all of his foes into submission.

This was one of the most remarkable military turnarounds that have ever been recorded in history.

Yet despite Charles’ phenomenal victories against overwhelming odds he was eventually defeated by a Russian force with over twice as many men as he had at the Battle of Poltava.

In the years following this Charles fled into exile in the Ottoman Empire before returning to attempt one last ditch attempt to defeat his enemies and return the Swedish Empire to its former glories.

Robert Nisbet Bain’s fascinating work Charles XII and the Collapse of the Swedish Empire records in fascinating detail the advent and subsequent demise of this remarkable leader.

    R. Nisbet Bain was a British historian and linguist who worked for the British Museum. Bain was a fluent linguist who could use over twenty languages. Besides translating a number of books he also used his skills to write learned books on foreign people and folklore. His book Charles XII and the Collapse of the Swedish Empire was first published in 1895 and he passed away in 1909.
